I just saw this movie today and I can say that even if you hate wrestling you won't walk away from the movie going 'see this proves how fake wrestling is.'
Rather, you'd walk away going 'Man, these guys put themselves through a lot just to entertain us.'
Having been a fan of wrestling since childhood, I have to admit I LOVED this movie. And having viewed so many "Beyond the Mat" documentaries, I had that much more appreciation of the film. From how they show how they blade themselves during a match, to all the steroid and drug use. Mickey Rourke told not just a fictional story but the real life story of a lot of wrestlers.
I mean thats how those guys really live.Which is why the documentary style in which the film was shot was a very good idea. Good one Darren.

But the movie goes beyond just telling the secrets of wrestling. But a living train wreck of a man who can only win inside the ring. I mean some of it was so hard watch actually. Just watching the "ram" endure so much  hardship from losing is family and trying to make ends meet was almost tragic. But most of  the ruin he brought into his life was his doing and yet you will feel nothing but sympathy for him.

But my favorite scene had to be the nintendo scene. When the rourke pulls out the old NES and plays with the kid. And the kid asked him about Call of Duty 4 and he has no idea what he's talking about. Haha.

But I HIGHLY recommend this movie. Wrestling fan or not, you'll love it.

I love Aronofsky's stuff but there was no possible excuse for The Fountain; it was self-serving pretentiousness. He passed on Watchmen to make The Wrestler which at a glance seemed like dramatic all-ages schlock... Oh good fuck no. The man has absolutely still got it. And apparently he's decided to reboot Robocop next.

Haha. I have friends who thought The Fountain was like Aronofsky's best
work ever. I personally didn't enjoy it at all. I heard about the robcop
thing too. Hmm, I can't imagine sci-fi action is his thing.

I never thought a Ron Howard type movie would end up being his thing either and he completely blew me away. When he talked about Requiem For A Dream he called it his "hip-hop monster movie." The guy consistently surprises me.
